The Mountain Teaches Us: Resilience at WVABBTS

There is something about a mountain that refuses to let you hide. It exposes your strengths, your fears, your habits, and your limits. It demands honesty. It demands effort. And if you stay with it long enough, it teaches you resilience…the kind that lasts far beyond a race course or a training lane.
Resilience is not a slogan at WVABBTS. It is the quiet, daily work our athletes do long before the crowds arrive, long after the lifts stop spinning, and long before anyone sees a result sheet. It is the early mornings when the wind is sharp and the legs are heavy. It is the training block that doesn’t go as planned. It is the run where everything feels off, and the next run where everything clicks. It is the courage to try again.
Resilience is built in the repetition, the setbacks, the breakthroughs, and the community that surrounds each athlete. It is built in the moments when no one is watching.
A Legacy of Grit
Since 1934, WVABBTS has shaped athletes who understand that grit is something you earn. Our alumni have gone on to become Olympians, national team athletes, innovators, and leaders in every field imaginable. What unites them is the resilience they learned here.
They learned to fall and get back up.
They learned to push through discomfort.
They learned to trust the process.
They learned to lead themselves.
These lessons stay with them long after they leave Waterville Valley.
Resilience in a Changing Landscape
Today’s snowsports are more competitive than ever. The pathways are narrower, the expectations higher, and the pressure greater. WVABBTS athletes are not defined by podiums alone. They are defined by the way they respond to challenge.
At WVABBTS, we recognize that not every athlete will become elite. Alpine and freestyle are vehicles for something deeper. They teach discipline, focus, humility, and perseverance. They teach young people how to manage adversity, how to stay grounded under pressure, and how to keep moving forward when the outcome is uncertain.
These are the skills that matter in college, in careers, and in life.
A Community That Builds Strength
Resilience is not built alone. It is built in a community that believes in you, challenges you, and holds you to a higher standard. Our coaches, teachers, and staff understand that their role is not only to develop athletes, but to develop people. They teach our athletes to embrace discomfort, take ownership of their growth, support their teammates, stay curious, stay humble, and stay hungry. This is the culture that defines WVABBTS. It is the culture that has carried us for nearly a century.
The Mountain as Mentor
Every day, our athletes step onto terrain that demands their full attention. The mountain does not care about yesterday’s results or tomorrow’s goals. It cares about the moment in front of you, the turn you are making right now. Their resilience is forged in the: cold, repetition, uncertainty, quiet moments between runs, and courage to try again. The mountain is our greatest teacher. With belief in the process, WVABBTS athletes learn to rise up.
