And Why It Matters for the Season Ahead
Every November WVABBTS U12 through FIS Academy student-athletes travel to Austria for early season glacier training. The decision is practical, strategic, and deeply rooted in our long standing relationships with the communities of Hintertux and Stubai. These two glaciers provide reliable early season snow, long uninterrupted terrain, and the controlled training environments that athletes need during the most important launch point of the season. At elevations above 3,000 meters, both glaciers deliver (relatively) consistent surfaces giving our athletes a significant head start.
This trip is an investment in development, confidence, and readiness. Here is why.
Our European home away from home
For decades WVABBTS has returned to the same Austrian glaciers, the same hotels, the same training lanes, and often the same people who welcome us. These long relationships matter. Coaches know the terrain intimately. Piste crews know our training needs and help set up world class environments. Athletes feel comfortable and safe because they recognize the mountain and the routines. That familiarity lifts the quality of training and creates a sense of belonging that makes Hintertux and Stubai feel like a second home.
Reliable snow and long training runs
High altitude snow offers dependable surface quality and full length runs that allow athletes to work on rhythm, timing, and speed with consistency. Coaches can build multi-day progressions because the snow holds up through each training block. The ability to ski long, clean laps early in the season helps athletes connect their dryland training to real on snow movement quickly and safely.
Coach and athlete relationships and team bonding
Traveling and training together builds trust. Athletes and coaches share meals, manage gear, tune skis, travel on buses, and spend real time together without the distractions of home, including visiting Christmas Markets in Innsbruck. These moments create communication and connection that make coaching more effective through the entire winter. Teams return home stronger, closer, and more unified. The relationships built in Austria become a foundation for better learning and more confident skiing all season long.
Conditioning that transfers
Summer and fall conditioning builds strength, balance, and power, but athletes need on snow time to translate those gains into ski specific movement patterns. Glacier training allows coaches to observe how each athlete is adapting and to adjust training loads on the spot. The transition from dryland to skiing becomes smoother and more productive because it happens in a controlled, high quality setting.
Gear getting dialed in
Early season is the time to test skis, plates, bindings, boots, and tuning setups. Glacier conditions offer a predictable surface where feedback is accurate. Athletes can test small adjustments run after run and finalize race ready equipment before the first Eastern races even begin. This prevents rushed in season fixes and gives skiers confidence that their gear is tuned specifically for them. Our long relationships in Austria, including with world class services from H&N, also support access to expert tuning and boot services when needed.
Technique and fundamentals
November is the moment to reinforce fundamentals. With stable snow and few interruptions, coaches can run focused drill progressions and repeat technical tasks that lock in clean movement patterns. For U12 and U14 athletes this builds a crucial foundation. For U16 and FIS athletes it sharpens precision and consistency that translate directly into results. The work done here reduces early season mistakes and builds technical stability for the months ahead.
Practical notes for families
We structure the glacier trip carefully to support athlete health and optimal training. Coaches manage load, recovery, hydration, and sleep, and communicate expectations clearly. While the travel requires time and commitment, the return on investment is significant. Athletes come home with a month of high value skiing already accomplished, which sets the tone for a strong and confident season. Plus, we send a teacher with the team to help support academic progress.
Training at Hintertux and Stubai each November is a deliberate choice backed by years of experience and success. The combination of reliable snow, technical focus, equipment preparation, conditioning transfer, and strong coach athlete relationships creates an early season foundation that pays off all winter.
For U12 and U14 athletes it accelerates learning.
For U16 and FIS athletes it elevates performance.
For WVABBTS it builds a community of prepared, resilient, and passionate skiers who are ready to take on the season with confidence.
