WVA Middle School

Waterville Valley Academy (WVA) Middle School Program

Term Dates: Late November – March

Grades: 6–8 | Day Program (Boarding by exception for 8th grade only)

The WVA Middle School Program is designed for motivated student-athletes in grades 6 through 8 who are ready to take their athletic and academic development to the next level. These years—between the ages of 11 and 14—are foundational in both sport and education, and our program is crafted with that in mind. At WVA, middle schoolers don’t just train and study—they begin to discover who they are as athletes, students, and individuals.

Purpose-Built for Growth Years

This is a critical stage in every athlete’s long-term development. The WVA Middle School Program offers:

  • Top-Level On-Snow Training: Focused, discipline-specific coaching for Alpine and Freestyle athletes, aligned with each athlete’s stage of development.
  • Age-Appropriate Conditioning: Off-snow training that emphasizes strength, agility, balance, and injury prevention—designed specifically for the physiological needs of young, growing athletes.
  • Character & Life Skills Development: As students navigate intensive training and academic commitments, they develop time management, personal accountability, and a strong work ethic that will serve them far beyond the slopes.

Academics That Support and Challenge

WVA’s Middle School academic program balances challenge with support, recognizing the unique demands of student-athletes at this stage:

  • Core Curriculum: Taught using WVA’s developmentally aligned curriculum in:
  • English/Language Arts
  • Social Studies/History
  • Science
  • Home School Integration: Students follow their home school’s curriculum in:
  • Mathematics
  • World Languages

This hybrid approach allows students to stay connected with their home districts, making for a seamless transition post-season.

  • Individualized Academic System: Our small class sizes and dedicated faculty ensure personalized instruction tailored to the needs, pace, and learning style of each student. Academic programming is built around the training schedule to allow students to succeed in both arenas.
  • Ongoing Communication with Home Schools: WVA works closely with families and sending schools to ensure alignment and consistency, keeping students on track academically while they pursue high-level training.

Student Life & Structure

  • Day Program Model: The Middle School Program is designed for day students, allowing younger athletes to maintain home routines and local family support.
  • 8th Grade Boarding (by exception): In rare and carefully considered cases, boarding may be available for select 8th grade students who demonstrate the maturity and independence necessary for residential life.
